Two Grand Rapids men were sentenced Monday on charges stemming from an April stabbing.
Tobias Mark Lanum, 18, pleaded guilty on Aug. 9 to one count of felony attempted intentional second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing of John Bennett of Bovey in the Seven Cities area north of Coleraine on April 2. He was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in prison.
Lanum also pleaded guilty in August to one felony count of third-degree assault in connection with an assault on Anthony Richard Reardon in Grand Rapids on March 26. Lanum was sentenced Monday to one year and one day in prison for that crime. The sentence will run concurrent with his sentence for the Bennett assault.
Andrew Gary Dowling, 19, pleaded guilty on Aug. 9 to one count of aiding and abetting attempted first-degree assault in the attack on Bennett. He was sentenced Monday to serve 12 months in jail, received a stayed 51½-month prison sentence and placed on supervised probation for 10 years.
Bennett was stabbed eight times in the chest, abdomen, spine and leg, and also had a laceration on his throat. Lanum and Dowling were accused of trying to kill Bennett and burn his body in a mine dump because they thought he told police about a fight. He was saved when another vehicle approached the area. Bennett was treated at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital and later released.
