Owners of a home in Duluth's East Hillside awoke to a smoked-filled bedroom Saturday morning, but managed to escape safely.

Duluth firefighters arrived at the house fire at 818 E. Eighth St. about 9 a.m., just minutes after smoke was reported coming from the second floor of the two-story single-family home, according to a department news release.

Firefighters got inside and quickly knocked down the fire, keeping it from spreading from a second floor room. The fire was limited to the room, but smoke damage, described as "significant," was sustained throughout the second floor, the release said.

The homeowners were asleep at the time of the fire, but one awoke in time for both occupants to get out. They were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Initial estimates put damages in Saturday's blaze at $25,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
