A federal judge in Madison, Wis., sentenced two Duluth men to prison Tuesday for their roles in a methamphetamine distribution ring.

Chief Judge Barbara B. Crabb sentenced Paul Berg, 40, to 18 months in prison and Jason Johnson, 34, to a year and a day for conspiring to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Between September 2003 and February 2004, the two acquired methamphetamine from Jesse Mateo Rodgigues in Minneapolis and brought it to the Twin Ports, where it was sold by Paul Horvatich and others.

Horvatich was previously sentenced to 25 years in prison, Rodrigues to just over 24 years, Isreal Flores to almost 22 years and Paul Letsos to almost five years. Letsos had operated Superior's Louis' Cafe, opened by his grandfather, until it went out of business in 2004.

Berg and Johnson were sentenced to substantially shorter sentences because they voluntarily withdrew from the conspiracy and acted only as couriers for a short time, Crabb noted at the sentencing.
