Taking a trip to the movies is about to get cheaper in the Twin Ports.
Marcus Theaters announced a new business model Monday for its theater in Superior with the Aug. 31 launch of The Superior Value Cinema. The movie house at 69 N. 28th St. will offer screenings of second-run films for $3 a seat.
Superior will become the fourth market where Marcus offers value pricing, according to Carlo W. Petrick, communications manager for the company. Other Marcus cinemas featuring the same pricing are located in Appleton, Wis., Moorhead, Minn., and Milwaukee.
"We do tailor these cinemas to specific markets, where we think audiences will appreciate the value pricing," said Petrick.
The four value cinemas that will be operating by the end of this month constitute only about 7 percent of Marcus' total portfolio of 56 movie venues with a combined 695 screens.

"We are pleased to offer residents in the Duluth/Superior area another movie-going option -- the ability to see popular movies at a value price about two months after the movies initially opened in first run theatres," said Bruce J. Olson, president of Marcus Theatres, in a press release.
"People who do not regularly attend first-run screenings but love to see movies the way they are meant to be seen -- on a big screen with popcorn, soda and concessions -- can now do that at a value price," he said. "Attending movies at the Superior Value Cinema is also ideal for people who missed a movie during its first run and still want to see it in a movie theatre for their entertainment enjoyment or simply want to see the movie another time."
Marcus will continue to offer first-run movies in the Twin Ports at its recently remodeled Duluth Cinema and the Lakes Cinema in Hermantown.
Marcus is the sixth-largest movie theater operator in the nation, with holdings in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and Ohio.
