The Superior Fire Department responded to an explosion about 8:30 this morning.
A utility trailer parked near the Pokegama River in the Superior Municipal Forest exploded and caught fire. Superior Fire Battalion Chief Steve Edwards said he saw clouds of black smoke the moment he left headquarters.
Edwards and a city police officer were the first on the isolated scene at the remote location on a gravel road north of Wisconsin Highway 105. They found the enclosed, dual axle trailer fully engulfed.
A fire truck arrived within several minutes; there were two or three smaller, secondary explosions before the fire was fully extinguished, Edwards said.
No one was injured in the incident.

The trailer and its contents were destroyed. Fire investigators are on the way to the scene, Edwards said, and the police are trying to locate the trailer's owner.
There's no reason the trailer would be in the Municipal Forest, Edwards said. It's too early to tell what caused the explosion.
The trailer's contents included an air compressor, propane tank, fuel tanks and hand tools.
