A section of North Shore Drive between Ryan Road and Homestead Road will close on Monday for a bridge construction project.
Traffic will be detoured onto Minnesota Highway 61 using Ryan and Homestead roads, according to a news release from St. Louis County.
The $4.97 million project will replace a 99-year-old bridge over the French River. Work is expected to last until mid-November. The project also includes reconstructing 875 feet of roadway as well as improvements to the rest areas along the side of the road. That includes a wheelchair-accessible overlook structure at lake level, additional parking and a sidewalk that crosses the new bridge.
Some work, such as landscaping and final cleanup, will take place next year, but the road will remain open during that time, the news release said.
The project is funded by federal and state aid, and transportation sales taxes.
Because of the cancellation of Grandma's Marathon, the reconstruction project is happening two weeks sooner than planned.
