Construction of a series of improvements at the intersection of U.S. Highway 53, Ugstad Road and Lavaque Bypass will cause road and lane closures in Hermantown beginning Monday. Both Ugstad Road and Lavaque Bypass will be closed at Highway 53, a St. Louis County news release said. Additionally, there will be lane closures on Highway 53. The closures are expected to last until mid-September.
The $900,000 project includes the replacement of traffic signals at the intersection, plus the addition of turn lanes on Ugstad Road and Lavaque Bypass. A new sidewalk also will be added along Lavaque Bypass.
The improvements are a joint project of St. Louis County, the city of Hermantown, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Detour signs will be posted directing traffic on Lavaque Bypass to use Martin Road and Midway Road. Ugstad Road will be detoured on Arrowhead Road and Lavaque Road.
KGM is the contractor.
