Workers will begin demolishing the old Carter Hotel on Monday, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa announced in a news release Saturday.

The band owns the property, along with the adjacent Fond-du-Luth Casino. The Duluth Planning Commission in August approved a special use permit to allow removal of the long-shuttered building at 17 N. Second Ave. E.

The band plans to replace the building with an 18-stall surface parking lot.

The hotel is between the casino and the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial. For the public’s safety and protection of the memorial, parts of it will be covered and closed to the public while the project takes place, according to the news release.

The project is expected to be completed by early June.
