Duluth’s can of worms — the Interstate 35 and 535 and U.S. Highway 53 interchange — received $20 million in federal money on Thursday.

“This federal grant is a monumental win for Duluth and our entire region, allowing our long-awaited and massive highway and bridge reconstruction project to go forward, driving business, commerce, and tourism and helping create and support hundreds of good paying jobs," said Rep. Rick Nolan in a news release Thursday.

The project is expected to cost up to $275 million, begin next year and take until 2023 to complete. The interchange currently has the “fourth-highest crash rate in the state.”
