DULUTH — A tornado struck a forested rural area outside the city earlier this week, damaging trees across a 3-mile stretch.
In a tweet Saturday, the National Weather Service Duluth confirmed a tornado 11 miles north of Duluth having occurred during storms Wednesday.
"There was one confirmed tornado that occurred in southern Gnesen Township near Eagle Lake, about 11 miles north of Duluth, on May 18, 2022," the tweet read. "It was rated as an EF-0, with estimated peak winds of 85 mph, and path length around 3 miles. No injuries or fatalities were reported."
The tweet included an illustration of the tornado's path, a virtual straight line running horizontally along the mostly green forest relief of the map.

"A brief tornado tracked approximately west to east from north of the intersection of Lismore Road and Arnold Road, across Eagle Lake Road, and then across Jean Duluth Road before ending near Lady Nicole Lane east of Jean Duluth Road," the National Weather Service further explained in a subsequent tweet.

It caused "numerous tree damage ... with a consistent tree fall pattern indicative of a tornado," the National Weather Service said.
The tornado was estimated to have occurred between 4:16-4:19 p.m. on the day of the storm.
