A $27 million expansion of a section of U.S. Highway 53 near Cook to four lanes leads the list of state highway projects announced today for the northeastern district of the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
In all, the district will undertake just over $70 million in construction: $52.7 in new projects and $17.3 million in funding carried over from 2006.
"We're going to be doing a lot of work this summer -- more than 100 miles of road," District 1 spokesman John Bray said.
But the backlog of needed work is growing, Bray said.
"We do what we are able to do with the funding provided us," he said.

This summer's District 1 projects include:
1. Location: Highway 53 (St. Louis County)
Description: 4-lane expansion, DWP railroad bridge to 4.1 miles south of Cook
Construction costs: $27 million
Traffic impacts: Daytime single-lane closure under flagger control for entire project.
2. Location: Highway 35 (Pine County)
Description: Chisago/Pine County line to Hinckley
