Tonight's council agenda: OK 9-percent water hike?

The Duluth City Council this evening will decide whether to accept a recommended 9 percent water rate increase for 2008 to help pay for pipe repairs and the retiree health care liability.

The Duluth City Council this evening will decide whether to accept a recommended 9 percent water rate increase for 2008 to help pay for pipe repairs and the retiree health care liability.

In addition, councilors could vote to lower the water utility rates for three neighboring cities by as much as 42 percent.

Later in the meeting, councilors are expected to vote on an ordinance change that would deregulate cab fare in the city. Smaller operators like the idea, while established providers say it could start a price war and much larger company could come in and wipe out the other competitors.
