The Tisdales will return to the Twin Ports for the group's first appearance in the area since the Fourth of July. The group will perform at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Thirsty Pagan in Superior. No cost.

The Tisdales, the brainchild of Rich Mattson (the Glenrustles/Ol' Yeller) and Tony Derrick (Giljunko/the Hotel Coral Essex), recently played in Kansas City at the annual North vs. South Music Festival. The members -- Derrick and Mattson are rounded out by Jason "Kokes" Kokal (one of Derrick's Hotel Coral Essex bandmates) and Derek Rolando (the Six 9's) -- have also kept busy up in Sparta, Minn., at Mattson's studio working on album No. 1, which is expected to be completed in time for Halloween.

For the Pagan show, the Tisdales will be joined by special guests the Red Flags and the Good Colonels.

The Red Flags are a Minneapolis-based band of, as Mattson puts it, "grizzled rock and roll veterans." The leader of the band used to be in a group with the Replacements' Bob Stinson called the Bleeding Hearts. (Find out more at www.myspace.com/theredflagsband .)

The Good Colonels features Mattson's nephew, Curtis. The younger Mattson is joined by his longtime pal Codie Leseman.

"Funny story about these kids is that Codie's dad and I used to play in bands together up until our 20s," the elder Mattson said. "The Good Colonels is just the two of them, and I saw them at Kurtfest in Eveleth and they were really good!"
