To decorate your home for the holidays, take an approach that you would take any time of the year, suggests Kathy Passarette, a certified interior decorator and founder of Creative Home Expressions, an interior decorating firm based in New York City.

She offers these holiday decorating tips:

* Choose an inspiration to get you started, such as a holiday gift wrap design, a favorite holiday decoration or even your home's existing color scheme. You may opt for a theme, such as Santas, snowmen or angels.

* Repeat your chosen holiday theme, colors and textures throughout your home. If you decorate your living room in red and gold colors, use red and gold towels in your kitchen, dinnerware, tablecloth or napkins.

* Match the style of your home with your decorations. If you have a country-style home, consider decorations made out of natural materials, such as grapevine wreaths.

* Keep it simple. Fill a basket with pine greenery or a large glass vase with colored ornaments. A pillar candle on a raised cake stand surrounded by greenery can be a centerpiece.

* Accessorize with odd numbers, such as three pillar candles or five snowmen.

* Show your collections to best advantage by presenting them in groups throughout your home and on different levels.
