Thunderstorms that have popped up across the Northland today have dropped a lot of small hail, with a chance for more storms through the afternoon and evening hours.

One storm prompted a severe thunderstorm warning for Superior during the late-morning hours, though there were no immediate reports of severe weather.

But there were many reports of non-severe, pea-sized hail across the region. The National Weather Service and News Tribune readers reported small hail in West Duluth, Piedmont Heights, Gary-New Duluth, Morgan Park, Esko, Rice Lake, Hermantown, Cloquet, Hawthorne, Lutsen, Iron Junction and Stone Lake.

Additional storms will move through this afternoon.

"Conditions are favorable for pea-sized hail to be produced in almost any storm that does develop, along with brief, heavy downpours," the Weather Service reported.
