Three injured in Highway 53 accident north of Duluth

Three people were injured Friday evening when their vehicle pulled into the path of a semitrailer on U.S. Highway 53 northwest of Duluth.

The semi was headed south on Highway 53 about 6:30 p.m. Friday when a 1999 Ford Explorer entered the highway from Caribou Lake Road, according to a report from the State Patrol. The semi struck the SUV on the passenger side.

The driver of the Explorer, Connie L. Irving, 54, of Duluth, suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to the patrol report.

Both her passengers, however, were critically injured.

Miranda K. Jackson, 24, of Cloquet, was in critical condition Saturday at St. Mary's hospital in Duluth.

Samuel T. Fish, 29, of Saginaw, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the patrol. He was in critical condition Saturday at St. Luke's in Duluth.

The semi driver, Scott Haworth of Hawthorne, Wis., was not injured.
