The Senior Reporter magazine has been acquired by Harbor Centers Inc. in Duluth. Larry Fortner is retiring as editor and publisher after starting the publication and operating it for 20 years.
"Harbor Centers Inc. is an area nonprofit that is dedicated to celebrating the second half of life, and looks forward to providing education, inspiring stories and helpful information through The Senior Reporter", says Keith Depre, chairman of the group's board of directors. "We plan to continue the 20 year tradition Larry Fortner established, and will provide unique area information that will help anyone in the region live as vital and active a life as possible in the 50-plus years. The Senior Reporter will continue to network with organizations across the region and provide stories that will relate to anyone in the area."
In addition to The Senior Reporter, Harbor Centers currently operates Rainbow Community Center, Lincoln Park Community Center and the Hands in Service Duluth program. Current center-based programs include arts education, an education/lecture series, computer technology and recreation, primarily for people 50 and older. Harbor Centers also provides health education and screening outreach programs in cooperation with local colleges and other organizations.
The Hands in Service Duluth program provides volunteer services in the Lincoln Park neighborhood to help low-income seniors in the Lincoln Park neighborhood stay in their homes longer by providing help with outside chores, snow shoveling, light home repairs, hand-rail and grab-bar installation and transportation.
This program will be expanded in 2008 to serve West Duluth and additional neighborhoods.
