  • The Duluth All-Stars baseball team defeated the Iron Range All-Stars by a score of 3-2. Central's Dean Bauers drove in two runs and was named the the most valuable player.
  • The Duluth Huskies defeated the Rochester Honkers by a score of 2-1 in Northwoods League baseball action. Huskies pitcher Andy Marks pitched seven 1/3 innings of shutout ball.

On Sunday, the Huskies defeated the Honkers by a score of 3-2. The Huskies pitching staff shutout Rochester after the first inning.

  • Ali Hassan Majid, known as the "Chemical Ali" because he had a role is gassing thousands of Kurds, was convicted of genocide. With this verdict, Majid was sentenced to death by hanging, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Monday, June 25

  • Steve McLister, the general manager of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, was named the new publisher of the Duluth News Tribune.
  • The Duluth City Council voted against the proposed increase in water rates. If the rates were raised, $2.4 million would have been created in revenue. $669,000 of that would have been used for retiree health-care.

This measure will also affect Hermantown, Proctor and the Rice Lake Township. Their rates will now not drop significantly next year.

  • Students in the Duluth school district outperformed every other district in the state of Minnesota in writing tests, according to a report released by Duluth schools.

All but six percent of 10th-graders passed the writing test. Ninth-graders, at a rate of 92 percent, passed the new Graduation-Required -Assessment for Diploma writing test.

  • A joint legislative hearing was held about why the Minnesota State Health Department withheld information related to the deaths of 35 Iron Range miners.

State Health Commissioner Dianne Manadernach apologized for withholding the information about mesothelioma, the cause of death for the miners. These apologies didn't seem to resonate. Many DFL members of the House and Senate called for resignation.

  • The Duluth Fire Department announced that the origin of the fire that occurred last Friday on Duluth's waterfront was a waste conveyor machine at True North Cedar, a wood products manufacturer. The DFD is still not sure what caused the blaze.

Wednesday, June 27

  • News broke that Marti Buscaglia, the publisher of the Duluth News Tribune, will not be the new publisher of the Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif.

Buscaglia withdrew her name from the position when it was discovered that she misrepresented her education on her resume.

  • The Duluth Heritage Sports Center began construction. The $15.5 million project is located in the Lincoln Park/West End area. The first phase of construction should be completed by this winter.

Thursday, June 28

  • A 26-year-old Superior man was arrested in Cloquet after trying to purchase an ounce of meth with counterfeit $20 bills. A warning was issued by Duluth police on Wednesday about those same bills. They were passed by many local businesses in the Northland.

The man is being held in Carlton County Jail for charges related to counterfeiting and possession of a controlled substance.

  • Ellen Wiss, Hermantown school district's principal, was suspended for the second time in three years.

Wiss was disciplined several times in 2001 for violating directions. In 2002 she was reassigned to the Hermantown Middle School on special assignment. In 2004, she was suspended for 30 days for releasing students' private data.
No information was released about why Wiss was suspended.

Coming this weekend

  • The 82nd annual Duluth Hall of Fame award dinner will be held at the Northland Country Club at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 29.
  • The children's play "Snow White Ate the Apple, or, Peter Piper Picked a Who" will be performed at the Renegade Comedy Theatre at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 30 and Sunday July 1. This is the one hour-version of the show. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children. For more, call 722-6775.
