Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 13 and 14

  • The UMD women's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-0 victory over St. Cloud State on Sunday at the DECC.
  • Backers of the Duluth Heritage Sports Center say the groundbreaking originally planned for last month will probably happen in early spring. Organizers still need to raise $4 million from private contributors and businesses in Duluth. With or without the $4 million, however, they plan to begin construction when the ground thaws in April.

Monday, Jan. 15

  • On what would have been the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's 78th birthday, an estimated crowd of more than 500 people marched in Duluth. The line of marchers was more than a block long as they walked down Lake Avenue to Superior Street and then entered the skyway system at Wells Fargo bank to walk to the DECC, where civil rights activist Victoria Davis spoke. Boissey Johnson of Duluth is honored with the 2007 Justice for Peace award.

Tuesday, Jan. 16

  • The Minnesota Gopher's men's football team got a new coach. Tim Brewster, most recently the tight ends coach for the Denver Broncos, got the job.
  • Duluth Schools Superintendent Keith Dixon gave his State of the District address, where he spoke about the district's accomplishments and future hopes. District officials also revealed they estimate the districts debt will leave the Duluth school district with a $4.7 million deficit, the result of declining enrollment and increasing health-care costs.
  • The last cargo vessel departure occurred Tuesday, when the Mesabi Miner left the Twin Ports with 58,000 tons of coal.

Wednesday, Jan. 17

  • It was announced that David Croud's death was not on the Minnesota Department of Health's list of preventable "adverse health events". Croud died on Oct. 18, 2005, six days after going to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. There, he was restrained. At that time an investigator for the Minnesota Health Department's Office of Health Facilities Complaints said Croud was restrained in a manner that contributed to his death. Originally, Croud was taken to St. Mary's after a combative arrest.

Thursday, Jan. 18

  • It was announced that the Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will be delayed until Feb. 25. The cancellation is due to a lack of snow in the Northland. In the past 25 years, the race has been delayed three times due to a lack of snow.

Friday, Jan. 19

  • Omniumgatherum, a benefit in celebration of youth, will take place at Beaner's Central coffee house from 8 to 11 p.m. Local musicians, comedians, artists and the Madman of Magic will perform.

There will also be performances on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 3 to 5 p.m and 7 to 10 p.m.
This event is also sponsored by Mentor Duluth. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
