A visiting teen was struck by lightning Tuesday in Duluth while hail, strong winds and downpours battered much of the area into the evening.

Duluth police said the boy, a 16-year-old from Harris, Minn., was jogging along West Skyline Parkway about 5 p.m. when he was struck by lightning near Bardon's Peak. He was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. Luke's, where he was hospitalized in stable condition.

Rainfall of an inch to two inches was common along a line from Brainerd through the Twin Ports to Bayfield. Observers near Mellen and near Proctor reported 1.5-inch hail. Trees and power lines were reported down in Bayfield and Iron counties and in the Duluth area.

Some low-lying western Duluth streets were flooded briefly, with nearly an inch of rain falling quickly before 6 p.m. While the Weather Service officially reported less than an inch from the storm, Western Lake Superior Sanitary District gauges recorded 3.4 inches in Scanlon, 2.4 inches along the Munger Trail and 2 inches at the WLSSD plant in Lincoln Park.
