The St. Louis County Board of Commissioner's Ethics Committee today said charges of improper placement of a campaign sign by Commissioner Peg Sweeney were unfounded.
The committee sent a letter to the campaign chairman for Sweeney's challenger, Sam Haddad, saying they would not take any action on the issue. The letter also noted that staff for the county attorney's office recommended no action was warranted.
Haddad's campaign had claimed that Sweeney wrongly placed a campaign sign at the county fairgrounds in Proctor. But the committee noted that Sweeney had purchased the space from the Proctor race track.
"It's our opinion that the issues raised are not campaign practice violations,'' the letter noted, adding that no county policy had been violated.
On another claim, that Sweeney had copied information off the county's website and placed it on her campaign website, the committee noted that the information is open to everyone for public use.
