Authorities took a man into custody after a high-speed chase and crash north of Duluth Sunday evening.
Just after 5 p.m., the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office attempted to arrest a man near Cherry Township on domestic assault charges stemming from a Saturday incident in McKinley, the Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release. The man fled in what Lt. Todd Abernethy later told WDIO-TV was a minivan and attempted to ram one of the squad cars.
The man led officers from several agencies on a chase on state Highway 37, then south on U.S. Highway 53, the news release said, occasionally waving a rifle out the window before eventually throwing it onto the highway. Abernethy told WDIO-TV that deputies believe he possibly threw a handgun out the window as well.
A deputy performed a pursuit intervention technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, on Highway 53, near state Highway 33, “before any civilians could get hurt,” the news release said. The suspect was uninjured, but was taken to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth for evaluation before being booked into the St. Louis County Jail.
The Minnesota State Patrol and Gold Cross Ambulance assisted the Sheriff’s Office along with police departments from Eveleth, Gilbert and Hermantown.
