The University of Wisconsin-Superior honored the late Carol Stevens during its Woman of Color in Education Award reception and ceremony

March 3.

Stevens, longtime Superior educator, was posthumously named UWS's 2009-10 Woman of Color in Education. She worked for the Superior public schools from 1980-2005, initiating the Indian Education program and teaching Indian History and arts and crafts.

In her nominating letter for Stevens, Sandra Wright, herself a longtime educator in the Superior school district, wrote: "Carol was known and made weekly contact with every Native American child and parent in the school district. Many personal testimonials describe how she visited classrooms and homes to make sure that communication was open and often. Native and foster parents were encouraged to be proud, involved and knowledgeable about the culture and to take advantage of the rewards of education. By her example, many were encouraged to seek post-secondary degrees."

Stevens will also be honored at a statewide award ceremony during the 34th annual Wisconsin Women's Studies Conference in Whitewater on April 17.

A new scholarship fund has been set up in Stevens' name to help continue her work by providing support for a First Nations woman student who is a graduate of Superior High School and who attends or will attend UWS. The UWS Foundation has agreed to match the first $250 raised for the Carol Stevens scholarship. Donations can still be made in any amount.
