Western Lake Superior Sanitary District work will close the 4400 block of East Superior Street May 11-15.
WLSSD is beginning a project to rehabilitate a nearly 1-mile portion of its Lakeside Interceptor pipeline. The one-week closure is necessary for contractors to deliver equipment and prepare the area for a temporary pipeline to provide uninterrupted sewer service to the neighborhood during the six-week project, a news release said.
The Lakewalk in the area will also be affected. The temporary pipeline will be placed on the Lakewalk, and pedestrian and bike traffic will be diverted to a protected lane on Superior Street. The project will also result in other short-term road closures adjacent to the project. Visitors in the area are asked to watch for and obey signage and detours.
WLSSD’s Lakeside Interceptor pipeline was originally installed in 1967 and provides sewer services to Duluth’s eastern neighborhoods and as far north as Knife River along the North Shore, the news release said. The pipeline carries sewage to WLSSD’s wastewater treatment plant in Lincoln Park. WLSSD routinely monitors the condition of pipelines to ensure reliable services. This project is a planned repair within WLSSD’s Interceptor Rehabilitation and Reliability program
