Polk County Sheriff's Department officials received a call about 1:30 a.m. indicating that Jennifer Williams, 25, of the Round Lake area had been assaulted and was bleeding from the mouth.

Two officers from the St. Croix Tribal Police arrived on the scene and took Williams to meet an ambulance from the Luck Ambulance Service, which transported her to the St. Croix Falls Memorial Hospital in St. Croix Falls.

Medical staff there determined that Williams had a gunshot wound to her face. She was later transferred to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where she underwent surgery to remove a bullet fragment.

On Tuesday afternoon a Regions spokesperson reported that Williams was in fair condition.

Polk County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived on the scene of the shooting about 1:45 a.m.

Officials learned that one shot had been fired and that the alleged shooter was Bryan Corbine, 29, of the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation near Hayward.

Corbine reportedly had fled the scene on foot armed with a handgun. Deputies and tribal police officers believed that Corbine headed into a large wooded area east of Polk County Road E.

Authorities said a perimeter was set up in the area and additional deputies and tribal police officers were called in to assist in the search. A helicopter with infrared capability from the Minnesota State Patrol was also used.

However, after an hour over the area, helicopter operators were unable to locate Corbine.

After hearing the suspect had received help in leaving the area, authorities called off the search about 1 p.m. Sunday. It was thought that Corbine was heading to Duluth and possibly Canada.

An arrest warrant for attempted homicide was issued by Polk County authorities. Law enforcement authorities in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota were notified.

According to Lt. Steve Smith of the Polk County Sheriff's Department, Corbine surrendered to the Superior Police Department about 9:05 p.m. Sunday.
