Democratic candidate Nick Milroy will face independent candidate Jeff Monaghan in the 73rd District Wisconsin Assembly race on Nov. 4.

Milroy faced Bruce Meyers, Mary Tripp and Vern Johnson in the Democratic primary Tuesday. Voters unequivocally handed the nomination to Milroy, a Superior city councilor.

He carried 46 percent of the voters districtwide, a strong lead over educator Mary Tripp, who got about 34 percent of the vote. Vern Johnson, a Superior Fire Department captain, got 19 percent of the vote. Bruce Meyers, Hawthorne board chairman, earned fewer than 100 of the 7,806 votes cast.

Milroy carried Superior and Douglas County with 44 percent of the vote, but his strongest showing was in Washburn and Burnett counties, where he carried 56 and 60 percent of the vote, respectively.

Milroy said he was surprised by the turnout.

"You just never know going into the primary with four good candidates," he said. "It was humbling to have that much support from the voters."

The 73rd District covers Douglas County and the northern portions of Washburn and Burnett counties. The winner in November replaces longtime state Democratic Rep. Frank Boyle, who has held the seat since he was first elected in 1986.
