The interpretive center at Sugarloaf Cove is now open for the summer. Summertime hours are flexible, but in general the interpretive center will be open to the public from midmorning to mid-afternoon every day but Monday.
The grounds at Sugarloaf are always open, including the one-mile interpretive trail and the beach. "The whole site is beautiful," says Sugarloaf Interpretive Center Association Director Andrew Slade. The log building interpretive center houses exhibits about the natural and human history of the site. Visitors can learn about the rocks they find on the beach, see pictures and models of the log rafting operation and browse through a small collection of North Shore reading material.
Pam McDougall of Lutsen was recently hired as site manager, joining executive director Andrew Slade at the site. There is no charge to visit the site or interpretive center, but membership in Sugarloaf Interpretive Center Association is encouraged.
Sugarloaf Cove is between mileposts 73 and 74 just west of Taconite Harbor. For more information, contact (218) 740-2755 or sugarloaf@lakenet.com .
