Storms caused damage to Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Severe thunderstorms that rolled across northern Wisconsin Thursday caused significant damage to campsites and roads in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Severe thunderstorms that rolled across northern Wisconsin Thursday caused significant damage to campsites and roads in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Forest Service personnel began surveying the damage Thursday afternoon, and are in the process of clearing trees, branches and debris from roadways, trails, campgrounds, picnic areas and other recreation sites.

Forest officials urge caution on roads and trails across the area because of down and damaged trees.

According to forest officials, Sailor Lake Road is closed south of Sailor Lake Picnic Area to Gates Lake Road; Gates Lake Road is closed; the Flambeau Trail System is closed; the Sailor Lake Campground and picnic areas are closed; Forest Road 164 is closed.

The Black Lake and Moose Lake campgrounds sustained major damage, and crews are currently working to clean up the area and assess damage.
