A Democratic candidate has captured a major endorsement in the race for Minnesota's 8th Congressional District seat.

The United Steelworkers, which represents Iron Range miners, announced on Monday it's endorsing state Rep. Jason Metsa to fill the seat held by retiring U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Crosby.

USW District 11 delegates unanimously voted to endorse Metsa in the Democratic primary election, the union announced.

Metsa, a three-term state legislator from Virginia, is one of five Democratic candidates in the field, along with Joe Radinovich, Kristen Kennedy, Leah Phifer and Michelle Lee. Pete Stauber is the only Republican candidate and Ray "Skip" Sandman is running as an independent.
