The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has denied a request to close Tower Avenue and Belknap Street on July 4, changing the annual parade.
WISDOT's denial is because of the closure of the Blatnik Bridge while gusset plates are being reinforced, according to a Business Improvement District communication.
With the closure of the Blatnik Bridge and congestion on Belknap Street, there really is no way to detour people around town again, said Mark McGillis, Superior police traffic sergeant.
But the citizen's committee came up with another route for the parade Wednesday night. While the city offered the route once used for the FallFest Parade, committee members found the route presented numerous pitfalls, from being too long, running through residential neighborhoods and a host of other issues for a gathering of an estimated 10,000 people.
Instead, the committee proposed starting the parade at Superior High School and going west on North 28th Street. The route starts at Superior High School, travels west to Hammond Avenue, then south to Superior Middle School. Staging for the parade runs between North 21st Street and North 28th Street on Catlin Avenue.
