Northland tennis players, golfers start state tourney play today

Duluth East begins play today in the Minnesota Class AA high school boys tennis tournament at the Life Time Fitness 98th Street Club in Bloomington, Minn.

Unranked East (19-1) faces No. 1 Rochester Mayo at noon in the quarterfinals.

No. 10 Pine City of Section 7 faces No. 1 St. Paul Academy-Summit School in the Class A quarterfinals at the Life Time Fitness Club in Burnsville, Minn.

The individual singles and doubles tournaments are Thursday and Friday.

* Four Northland golfers are entered in the Minnesota Class AA tournament beginning today at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. Qualifiers from the area are Ashli Helstrom and Jamie Fenstermacher of Hibbing-Chisholm and Katie Casper of Grand Rapids in the girls 36-hole tournament, and Scott Mathews of Grand Rapids in the boys tournament.

The top-ranked Virginia-Mountain Iron-Buhl boys and the Duluth Marshall girls will compete in the Class A tournament Wednesday and Thursday at Izatys Resort near Onamia, Minn.

Duluth East baseball team wins two

Duluth East topped St. Francis 7-5 in the Section 7AAA Final Four double-elimination baseball tournament Monday in Chisago Lakes, Minn.

Greyhound pitcher Ryan McKowski went the distance, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

Sam Patnoe, Skyler Murray and McKowski each had doubles for the 'Hounds. Kevin Doudt had a two run home run for St. Francis.

Duluth Central 3, Forest Lake 2

The Trojans beat host Forest Lake in the section 7AAA Final Four playoffs to advance to play East. Dean Bauers pitched a complete game for the Trojans, earning the win.

Duluth East 6, Duluth Central 3

Adam Zwak pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out five as the Greyhounds edged their city rivals. John Tisak was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the East, and Carlson Keunang added two hits and two RBIs. Steve Volkner had a double for the Trojans.

Duluth Central (18-5) plays Forest Lake at 11 a.m. today, while Duluth East (15-7) will play the winner at 2 p.m. Both games are at Chisago Lakes.

Section 8AA

Bagley-Clearbrook-Gonvick 14,Deer River 1, 7 innings

Deer River was eliminated from playoffs following the blowout loss.

Jake Klostermeir pitched all seven innings for Bagley-Clearbrook Gonvick, allowing four hits, striking out three and walking five. Klostermeir also went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Gary Perrington was 1-for-3 with a double for Deer River, which finished the season 11-9.
