ST. PAUL -- Just weeks into his first term in the Minnesota House, State Representative Roger Reinert (DFL-Duluth) took the gavel and presided over one of the most powerful committees in the Legislature: the House Taxes Committee.
As vice chair, Rep. Reinert applied his years of experience running Duluth City Council meetings to overseeing an efficient and judicious taxes hearing in St. Paul.
"Different chamber, same responsibilities," said Reinert. "It was nice to have a gavel again, if just for a day."
The House Taxes Committee will be at the heart of the action this session as lawmakers wrestle with a $4.8 billion budget deficit. Rep. Reinert will play a central role in dealing with the state's record shortfall.
