An award-winning poet and poetry slam champion will be featured at The College of St. Scholastica’s 13th annual Warner Reading Series 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 in Somers Lounge on campus.

Danez Smith, who was born in St. Paul, is author of “[insert] Boy” and the chapbook “hands on ya knees.” He’s a winner of the Lambda Literary Award and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and is the recipient of fellowships from the McKnight Foundation, Cave Canem, Voices of Our Nation (VONA) and elsewhere.

Smith is a 2011 Individual World Poetry Slam finalist and the reigning two-time Rustbelt Individual Champion, and he was on the 2014 championship team Sad Boy Supper Club. A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience.

Smith earned a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a First Wave Urban Arts Scholar.

The public is invited to this free event and refreshments will be served. The evening will also include music from local keyboardist Dan Anderson, member of The Silk Sheiks.
