St. Louis County's Public Health and Human Services Department has been ranked first among large Midwest counties for its accuracy and its oversight of its food stamp program.
The county was recognized at a recent BIG TEN Food Support Conference for Midwestern states and counties that issue at least $10 million in food stamps each year.
St. Louis County food stamp financial workers and supervisors were recognized at the conference for their creativity, resourcefulness and accuracy in determining benefits. The county received an honor in 2006 for having the highest local agency accuracy rate,98 percent.
States included in the conference were Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. Counties in Minnesota represented at the conference were Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin, St. Louis and Ramsey.
St. Louis County Commissioner Steve O'Neil, chairman of the county's public health and human services committee, said the award is a testament to the hard work of the public health and human services department employees and shows that they are stewards of taxpayers' money.
