A St. Louis County motorist was among 21 drivers statewide ticketed for speeding over 100 mph in July.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office ticketed the motorist for driving 107 mph during a statewide speed-enforcement campaign, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety.
The highest speed recorded during the campaign was a motorist driving 135 mph near Benson, Minn. In addition to the 21 motorists ticketed for driving faster than 100 mph, 72 were cited for going more than 90 mph.
"Many motorists fail to see the dangers in speeding and don't understand its deadly consequences," Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said in a news release. "This campaign focuses on educating drivers that when your speed increases, so does your risk of crashing."
The department reports illegal and unsafe speeding factored in at least 86 deaths in 2010 -- 65 percent of which occurred in rural areas.

So far this year there have been 194 traffic deaths in Minnesota, compared to 229 at the same time last year.
Enhanced speed patrols will continue in select traffic areas through September.
