Final services at St. Edward's Episcopal Church, 4401 Glenwood St., were held Sunday, July 9, followed by the church's last potluck picnic. The Rev. Margaret Warren Thomas, priest-in-charge officiated the service, assisted by Lay Minister Ned Stokes.

Closing ceremonies, led by the Right Rev. James L. Jelenik, Bishop of the Minnesota Episcopal Diocese, were held Wednesday night.

St. Edward's Episcopal Church served as a place of worship for 48 years. The first services were held at the church on Aug. 10, 1958, about 15 months after the ground breaking on July 14, 1957.

Initial membership was comprised of families from four Duluth Episcopal churches: Trinity Cathedral, St. John's, St. Paul's and Holy Apostle's.

Senior Warden Don Pederson said "We leave a legacy of exceptional outreach, including summer Bible studies, teen dances, community dinners, preparation and serving of lunches at Damiano Center and participation with other Lakeside/Lester Park churches in a wide variety of programs and events."

"Notable," he said. "Were earlier sharing of our church with Unitarians and the current Parallel Ministry two-year series of worship services and feasts with the Native American community, along with other activities."

"This is a really sad time for the dwindling number of older persons who form our church family," Thomas said. "But we all realize remaining members can no longer provide the necessary funding and volunteer work required for our church."

"As our senior warden pointed out," she said. "St. Edward's has a proud record of community outreach and service in its rather short history, including considerable public service efforts by individual members, inspired in recent years by our year-around Christian Stewardship program."
