A late-arriving winter storm has been hitting areas south of the Twin Ports today and is still on the way to Duluth, and is expected to leave 3 to 10 inches of snow across parts of the Northland before it moves out of the area early Wednesday.

The heaviest snow is expected this evening, with snowfall totals from 6 to 10 inches expected along a narrow line from Lake Mille Lacs through southern Carlton and northern Pine Counties and into Northwestern Wisconsin.

The Twin Ports should still see 6 to 7 inches of new snow from the storm before it moves out of the region early Wednesday, said Dean Packingham, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Duluth.

The Weather Service says only a few inches are expected to the north, including the Iron Range, with little or no snowfall farther north along the Ontario border.

A very narrow band of moderate to heavy snow has been falling throughout the day, leaving 3 to 7 inches on the ground so far across parts of Carlton, Pine, Aitkin, Crow Wing counties in Minnesota and Douglas, Burnett, Ashland and Iron counties in Wisconsin. Several schools in those areas closed early today.
