The Ely Winter Festival starts Friday and fills 10 days with snow-carving, dancing, poetry, music and art. Plus, a lot of great food.
The event that gets the press is the International Snow Sculpting Symposium in Whiteside Park: 20 "amateur" teams and 20 "expert" teams come from around the world to carve giant snow blocks into anything you could think of during the first week of the festival.
Events all week range from ski races to wolf-howling. At2 p.m. Saturday, there's bluegrass with Gold Wing Express from Branson, Mo., in Washington Auditorium, 600 E. Harvey St. Tickets cost $15.
On Saturday night, Lamont Cranston plays the Mukluk Ball in the historic Ely Community Center Ballroom, 30 S. First Ave. E. Doors open at 7 p.m., music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 at www.mukluks.com .
