St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic Health System and the Benedictine Health System (BHS) have created a closer relationship at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior. Over the past two months, BHS has begun overseeing and managing the daily operations at St. Mary's Hospital of Superior, Wis., and sharing its expertise in community acute care management to a greater degree. St. Mary's in Superior became a BHS Catholic sponsored organization in 1995 under St. Mary's Medical Center, which then became part of the SMDC system.

"BHS has a proven track record when it comes to successfully managing small community hospitals," said Peter Person, MD, CEO. "I'm confident they will use their expertise to full advantage in Superior, just as they have done for us at Pine Medical Center in Sandstone."

"We have a strategy for St. Mary's of Superior that involves the recruitment of physicians and flexing staff to volume on a daily basis," said Dan McGinty, BHS vice president, Operations. "BHS will bring staff with experience in community hospitals to assist local leadership."

In addition, BHS owns or manages five critical access hospitals, a status being pursued by St. Mary's of Superior.

McGinty said the new contractual arrangement brings in more BHS involvement in the hospital's daily operations and gives St. Mary's-Superior staff greater access to BHS resources.
