Authorities said Tuesday that a car that drove into a Superior harbor slip on Monday had been seen "racing around" an industrial property prior to the crash.
The body of a 77-year-old Superior man was removed from the vehicle after it sank in 10 to 15 feet of water in the Tower Slip.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday that authorities were called to Barko Hydraulics, 1 Banks Ave., just after 4:30 p.m. Monday after employees reported the vehicle on the property.
"The vehicle made a few passes in the gated area of the lot then left the gated area and drove at high speed across the lawn and off the pier into the water," the Sheriff's Office reported.
Employees saw the car float to the middle of the slip and then sink, authorities said. They did not see anyone try to get out of the car.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office divers located the vehicle; the driver's body was removed from the car.
The man's name has not been released pending notification of family. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday at the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office in Ramsey, Minn.
The case remains under investigation.
