Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across the Northland later this evening, with large hail, damaging wind and heavy rain the main threats.
A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of the Northland - including the Twin Ports - until 1 a.m. The watch also includes the Iron Range, Arrowhead, North Shore and most of Northwestern Wisconsin.
In addition to wind and hail, there also will be a slight risk of tornadoes across the region as storms developing to the west move east-southeast across the rest of the Northland.
The storms moving this way have produced reports of wind damage and large hail across northwestern Minnesota so far this evening. Officials in Bemidji requested emergency travel only in the city, and all phones were reported down except for 911, in the wake of severe storms that moved across Beltrami County.
As of 7:25 p.m. several severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for parts of the Northland, including the Iron Range. Check the News Tribune's Twitter (@duluthnews) and Facebook pages for more frequent updates.
