The National Weather Service has extended a severe thunderstorm warning for a large part of the Northland, including Duluth, Superior and Cloquet, until 10 p.m. as strong storms with a history of producing damaging wind and large hail move across the area.

The storms are capable of producing winds in excess of 70 mph. They have downed large trees and caused damage in parts of Itasca County, and farther west in the Bemidji area.

The warning covers southern St. Louis, Douglas, northern Bayfield, northern Burnett, Carlton, northeastern Aitkin, northeastern Pine, southern Lake and eastern Itasca counties.
