Severe storms sweep across the Northland

Severe storms swept across parts of the Northland on Sunday evening, prompting a tornado warning for a time on the Iron Range. The National Weather Service said there were no immediate reports of tornadoes or funnel clouds.

There were reports of some trees and branches down in Virginia and Mountain Iron as the storms moved through at about 7 p.m. Shortly after 6 p.m., hailstones up to golf-ball size were reported in the Side Lake area of northern St. Louis County, and marble-size hail was reported north of Chisholm in Sturgeon Township.

Law enforcement reported trees and power lines down in the Biwabik and White Township areas on the eastern Iron Range, and near Lake Leander north of Buhl.

As of late evening, though, none of the storms had reached the Twin Ports. After record rainfall in June, Duluth has been very dry in July. Through Sunday evening the Duluth International Airport had received 0.82 inches of rain for the month of July, more than 2 inches below

normal.
