A contractor struck a natural gas line in Duluth on Tuesday morning, spurring utility officials to shut off gas for several residents in Central Hillside.

Howard Jacobson, the city’s water and gas supply manager, said the accident happened about 7:45 a.m. Gas had been turned off for residents in a couple square blocks between Lake Avenue and First Avenue West in the area of East Fourth and Fifth Streets.
Workers had to restore gas service one residence at a time.
Residents returning home from work in the late afternoon were met with notices on their doors. Liz Bieter, customer service manager for ComfortSystems, the city’s public utility, said extra staff was brought in late Tuesday afternoon and early evening to restore gas for the some 40 residences that saw service interruption.
“They just have to call us and we’ll go out,” Bieter said.
