Pizza. Everyone has a favorite, and so much about a slice of salty, gooey, greasy goodness is debatable: Thin or deep dish, exotic or all-American supreme, sopping with grease or sopping with sauce? People are passionate about pizza.
After a News Tribune request for best pizza nominations went out, more than 100 e-mail, phone and even snail mail shout-outs came in.
We excluded national chains from our search because we were interested in unique, locally owned businesses.
We whittled the list of 19 to eight based on the number of responses. Then we threw on stretchy pants for some intensive pizza-eating.
We ate mostly the same kind of pizza everywhere -- with a couple of exceptions based on reader suggestions -- but made sure each pie had a red-sauce base.

The two of us and photographer Clint Austin rated each pizza.
In addition to an overall rating, we judged grease factor on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most greasy.
The top overall rating was a possible six pizza slices. You'll find the slice ratings with each of the eight listings.
