The Duluth School Board voted to increase its levy Tuesday night, but the jump won't cause property taxes to climb.

At the Duluth school district's annual Truth-in-Taxation meeting, board members voted to increase the levy about 3.5 percent next year, bringing the total amount from $22.5 million to $23.3 million. Even though the number went up, taxes won't necessarily follow suit because the district's overall tax capacity increased, according to Bill Hanson, business director for the school district.

"That means if your home value didn't change, your taxes are going to go down," Hanson said.

Under the change, owners of $100,000 homes would see their taxes decrease slightly from $252 in 2009 to $248 in 2010. Double those numbers for a $200,000 home.

Only board member Gary Glass voted against the levy.
