Saturday's snow and ice made for slippery roads in the Northland

A glaze of ice and several inches of snow in the morning, followed by a burst of several more inches of snow in the afternoon, caused lots of travel headaches around the Northland on Saturday.

A glaze of ice and several inches of snow in the morning, followed by a burst of several more inches of snow in the afternoon, caused lots of travel headaches around the Northland on Saturday.

The National Weather Service reported 4.9 inches of snow at the Duluth airport as of 6 p.m. Saturday.

Elsewhere around the region, weather spotters reported:

  • 9 inches of snow at Leader in Cass County.
  • 7 inches at Bigfork.
  • 6.5 inches at Kabetogama.
  • 6 inches at Cloquet.
  • 4.3 inches near Proctor.
  • 3.5 inches at McGregor.
  • 2 inches at Little Marais. The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported difficult driving conditions across much of the Northland on Saturday evening. There were numerous reports of spinouts and crashes along Interstate 35 south of

    Duluth and elsewhere around the region.

    The snow was forecast to end overnight, and today's forecast calls for partly sunny skies.
