On Sept. 20, 1972, parts of the Duluth area received nearly a half-foot of rain, sparking another major flooding event that year.
A month earlier, central parts of the city had received several inches of rain in just a couple hours, causing an estimated $12 million in damage to streets and buildings. The Sept. 20, 1972 flood event caused another $1 million in damage.
We shouldn't see anything remotely like that Saturday, though showers and thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and evening as a cold front moves across the area. The National Weather Service reports that some of those storms may be on the strong side, with hail and high winds possible. There also should be some sunshine Saturday, with highs nearing 70 in Duluth.
Expect partly sunny skies and slightly cooler conditions on Sunday with highs in the mid-60s. The quiet weather pattern should continue for the early part of the work week.
