A 26-year-old Saginaw woman was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 53 late Saturday night.

Annie J. Sabrowski was a passenger in a northbound Chevrolet Cavalier that went off Highway 53 and into trees near Independence at 11:55 p.m., according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to St. Luke's hospital in Duluth.

The driver of the vehicle was Gideon J. Martin, 25, of Duluth, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and also was transported to St. Luke's. The State Patrol reported that alcohol was detected in Martin's system, but did not say if that was a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

The car Martin was driving was listed as a total loss.
