Wrapping up Rubber Chicken Theater's inaugural season, Brian Matuszak announces the last project of 2008 from his new theater company: the Chicken Hat Plays. This time around, the event will be one day only.

"This is such an intense weekend of theater -- it is six weeks of rehearsal crammed into 12 hours -- I decided to scale it back to one day only," Matuszak said.

The Chicken Hat Plays will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Proctor Area Community Center, located at 100 Pionk Drive in Proctor. Tickets are $10.

The Chicken Hat one-day event will be a wildly creative day of theater. On Friday night, everyone will come together and toss prompts into a "who" hat, a "what" hat and a "where" hat. Eight writers will then step forward, draw their prompts and go home to write up a 10-minute script that incorporates those prompts.

On Saturday, eight directors and a bunch of actors will show up at 8 a.m., along with the very tired writers. The directors will draw their scripts and their casts out of more hats -- then the fun begins. The directors and actors will rehearse all day, finding whatever props and costumes they can along the way, and, at 7 p.m., all eight shows are debuted to the audience.

Also new this time around: Suggestions are being solicited via the Rubber Chicken Web site, www.rubberchickentheater.com . The best who, what and where suggestions will be incorporated into the show. Plus, the top suggestions from each category will win a free pair of tickets to the upcoming Rubber Chicken Theater Holiday Comedy Revue. (Rubber Chicken Theater will be kicking off its 2009 season with that first annual Holiday Comedy Revue, "Hark! The Rubber Chicken Sings, or: I'll Be Home in Proctor." The sketch comedy show will run December 19-20, and 26-31.)

This Chicken Hat concept has proven to be a popular weekend for area theater artists. Writers, directors and actors from Rubber Chicken Theater, Renegade Comedy Theatre, Colder by the Lake, University of Minnesota Duluth Theatre, College of St. Scholastica Theatre, University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre, the Duluth Playhouse and other area theater groups take part, as well as a number of local high school students.

It provides artists from these groups the opportunity to work together and create live theater, oftentimes making for unique collaborations that might not otherwise happen. For example, a UWS instructor can direct St. Scholastica students, or professional performers from the Twin Cities might come up and get a chance to share some tips with area high school theater students.
